When I teach of group of people how to work with their dreams, I ask each of them to remember a recent sleep dream to practice the process on.

Charon the Ferryman

“What if I don’t remember my dreams?” is a question that always comes up.  Every time.

“Think of a recent waking dream you may have had,” is my response.

What is a waking dream?  Well, a waking dream is something that happens to you in waking reality (i.e. when you are not asleep, meditating, doing trance work) that has the slightly surreal feeling of a sleep dream.

A waking dream is that experience of thinking of someone you haven’t seen or talked to in years and then running into them on the street.  Or being alerted by your dog to the blue heron standing in the small stream next to your driveway and then watching him walk out of the stream to your driveway to stand at the edge of the road, look both ways and then cross before taking flight (really happened).  Some experience out of the ordinary that Read More→

Theme, 9 of Swords. These Swords (thoughts, attitudes, beliefs, communication) are waking you up at night…are they worries or dreams? For this week, prepare yourself for sleep in a way that supports your creative night life. Cleanse your space and your mind. Do a brain dump of ideas and concerns before going to sleep. Keep a dream journal and pen next to the bed so that you can record the dreams with their attendant inspiration and problem solving.

Focus, 6 of Swords. In order to continue moving forward successfully with your creative work, it’s important to know what beliefs and attitudes support you and which ones you need to leave behind. What old thought patterns do you need to drop?

Action, 3 of Cups. Creativity arises out of joy and celebration, so make sure to celebrate this week. Also, when you enter your work space, put on some music that supports your creative mood.

Gift, Knight of Cups. Look for someone this week who is a strong emotional champion of your creative work, who can help you negotiate the sometimes deep and dangerous waters of moving your work into the world.

In my dream, I am away from home, sleeping in a strange bed.  During the night, I was frightened, like a child, by the sense of something under the bed.  In the light of day, I decide to brave up.  I get down on the floor, reclining on my right side with my feet towards the head of the bed.

Cautiously, I raise the white eyelet dust ruffle, breathing a sigh of relief when it appears that the box springs (in black and white ticking) go all the way to the floor.

But then I realize it is only fabric. Something is pulling that fabric up and inwards. Out of the darkness,  Read More→

In the dream, I am in my house (not mine in waking reality), a Cape Cod-style in a suburban neighborhood.

Dinosaurs threaten the area and homeowners have secured their homes. I am sleeping until suddenly, I wake to the sound of something pounding on the front door. Throwing on a robe, I rush to the stairs, worried that my dad might not have locked the front door (my dad doesn’t live with us).

Hoping to lock the door before the dinosaur breaks through, I hurry down the stairs to the front door as the dinosaur pounds against it. Read More→

Perhaps I am a bear, or some hibernating animal, underneath, for the instinct to be half asleep all winter is so strong in me. ~ Anne Morrow Lindbergh

There is a wilder solitude in winter/When every sense is pricked alive and keen. ~May Sarton

Can you feel it? Even in the midst of the hustle and bustle of holiday preparations? As we creep closer and closer to the shortest day of the year?

Can you feel that desire to curl up someplace warm—preferably in front of a fire—and read a good book or just…daydream?

It’s as if some deeply buried primitive part of ourselves emerges at this time of year, demanding that we slow down, turn in, sleep and dream.

That instinct, centuries ago, helped us preserve our energy, helped to keep the fat on our bodies and therefore, the warmth in our blood.

That instinct kept us from roaming too far from the fires where wild things waited Read More→

Many people pray and receive the answer to their prayers, but ignore them—or deny them, because the answers didn’t come in the expected form. ~ Sophy Burnham

Answers that don’t come in the expected form are something I warn people about all the time when I am teaching them how to incubate dreams.

Incubating a dream is a great way to Read More→

As creatives and creative entrepreneurs, we all want to be celebrities. We want to be recognized for who we are and what we do.

For creatives, celebrities act as cultural icons. We love hearing stories like J.K.Rowling’s–you know, the one where she submitted her manuscript hundreds of times, receiving rejection after rejection only to finally hit it big. Those stories give us hope and courage that someday our work will gain the recognition and success it deserves.

Probably because of this, celebrities show up frequently in our dreams, and, as I’ve discovered in my work for PEOPLE Country monthly magazine, even celebrities dream of celebrities.

But why do we dream of celebrities like Elvis Presley, Queen Elizabeth, Pierce Brosnan, or even President Obama? Usually for one (possibly more) of three reasons: Read More→
